about

Monta Anthony grew up in a small town outside of Richmond, Virginia before moving to South Carolina as a college student. Although trained as a classical musician, Monta always felt more passionate about art than music. To feed her artistic urges, over the years she studied art and pottery whenever possible while raising her four children – three boys and a girl. As her children approached college, Monta began painting seriously. Having worked in watercolors, sculpture and large scale murals, she found her love in oils, and has since accomplished many commissioned works.

Monta cites Belgian artist Marianne Jansen as her hero and mentor, and has studied with noted artists Gabor Svagrik, Peggi Kroll Roberts, Robert Lemler, William Jameson, Rhett Thurmond and Jeffery T. Larson, Jim Carson, Dee Beard Dean and Anne Blair Brown. She is also inspired by her favorite color – red – and thus often primes her canvases in the bright, cheerful color.

Monta can often be found hard at work in her painting studio in her home, which is just outside of Spartanburg, South Carolina. She shares her country life with her husband of over thirty years and their two labs, “Southern Belle” and “Maddux.”

She is a member of the Woman Painters of the Southeast, Oil Painters of America and the Spartanburg Artist Guild.
